Shame is experienced as profound inner torment, a sickness of the soul.
Shame arises from the core belief that our very being is flawed. Shame can manifest itself in feelings of not being good enough, not deserving, not being worthy and/or not being lovable. It is often well disguised. In fact, shame is usually hidden. Individuals who appear to be outgoing with high self-esteem can also secretly be very shame-bound.
There is a distinction between guilt and shame; guilt is ‘I made a mistake and if I made a mistake I can do something about it’ – i.e., I can ‘fix’ it. Shame, however, is more insidious and destructive in its hold. Shame is ‘I am a mistake and if I am the mistake, there is nothing I can possibly do about it’.
Shame frequently gives rise to feelings of being exposed, powerlessness, foolishness and neediness. Shame means you can feel voiceless, fraudulent and flawed. It is the source of many complex and disturbing inner states. Depression, alienation, self-doubt, isolating loneliness, paranoia, schizoid conditions, compulsive disorders, addiction and the splitting of the self are all rooted in issues of shame. Shame ensures that our relationships become emotionally ruptured and are eventually destroyed.
During this one-day course, we will expose and explore our shame in a respectful and safe environment. By unearthing our secret shame, we can unleash and liberate destructive patterns of behaviour. Through the acceptance of our shame, we will find new levels of authenticity, courage and emotional freedom.
